LEWISTON: Canadian man accused of stealing pickup, ATV
CRIME: Short chase ends with multi-agency search in the woods.
Staff Reports
A Canadian man has been charged with stealing a pickup, using it to transport a stolen ATV and then running from police early Tuesday in Lewiston.
Garrett General, 21, 2321 Fourth Lane, Oshweken, Ontario, was charged Tuesday morning with third-degree unauthorized use of a vehicle and fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property.
Deputies responded to an alarm at Bob Weaver Motorsports on Niagara Falls Boulevard in Wheatfield about 2:04 a.m.
A witness had called 911 to report the front door on the business was shattered. The witness had seen a dark-colored pickup, which had left southbound on Niagara Falls Boulevard with an ATV in the bed, the report said.
Deputies on Walmore Road about reportedly noticed General driving a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado, which had been reported stolen out of Niagara Falls.
After a brief pursuit, General pulled onto a dirt road off Green Road, the report said.
The lane was impassible, and deputies reportedly called off the pursuit but continued looking for General on foot.
General allegedly abandoned the pickup when it became stuck in the dirt.
Deputies found the pickup in the woods, unoccupied, and General was found shortly afterward, the report said.
Officers from the New York State Police, the Town of Niagara Police, North Tonawanda Police and Lewiston Police joined deputies in searching the area.
A U.S. Border Patrol helicopter joined the search, as well.
The Yamaha ATV in the bed of the pickup is worth about 3,000, the report said.
