POLITICS: Nolan launches Assembly candidacy

Michael P. Nolan, Elma town supervisor, on Thursday kicked off his campaign for state Assembly, 142nd district.

Nolan, a Subway franchise owner, said he wants to oppose tax increases and work on making Western New York a more attractive place for companies to locate.

“I love our community and it kills me to see our area struggle so,” he said.

Nolan, a Republican, is the youngest supervisor in Elma’s history and has served since 2003. He framed his state campaign as that of a business owner who could contribute “common sense” to Albany.

Nolan pledged he would support eliminating all state tax on gasoline and franchise tax on manufacturers; support a state cap on local property taxes; and work to reduce taxes for health care companies in exchange for the savings being passed on to policyholders.

He also pledged to personally recruit companies to relocate in Western New York.

“My No. 1 priority is to help middle-class families survive,” Nolan said.

Nolan is a lifelong Elma resident and a volunteer firefighter with a 24-year service record. He and his wife, Karla, have three children.

Nolan will pursue the GOP, Conservative and Independence endorsements, he said. Those all were granted to incumbent Assemblyman Michael Cole, R-Alden, in 2006. Cole said this week that he plans to run for re-election on those lines.

The 142nd Assembly district includes the city and town of Lockport and the town of Royalton.

Palace, Hartland get Greenway funding
The Historic Palace Theatre and the Town of Hartland both were cleared Tuesday to receive Niagara River Greenway funding for improvement projects.

The eight-member Host Communities Standing Committee voted unanimously to approve funding requests of $151,000 for the Palace and $244,000 for Hartland, which is planning a multi-phase town park enhancement project.

Jobless totals drop slightly
Unemployment in the Lockport area decreased slightly last month, but it wasn't because more people are going back to work.

The New York State Department of Labor reported Tuesday about 1,000 city residents were without a job in April, the fifth straight month with over 1,000 unemployed. That was down from the 1,100 it reported in March, however, the number of employed stayed the same at about 9,700 people.
