Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — State Police investigators continue to probe an incident Friday afternoon in which a woman was killed after she apparently jumped from her vehicle as it traveled along North Canal Road, just east of Day Road.
The incident, which occurred around 5 p.m., was initially reported that the victim may have jumped into the path of an oncoming vehicle.
Firefighters from Wrights Corners and Niagara County Sheriff’s deputies raced to the scene. Wrights Corners emergency medical technicians worked furiously to try to save the woman’s life. They could be seen providing CPR on the victim while a state police trooper stretched crime scene tape across the road.
North Canal Road was closed to traffic between Day and Harrington Roads. The road was re-opened just before 8 p.m.
Emergency officials at first sought Mercy Flight to transport the victim to Erie County Medical Center, but that request was later terminated.
Niagara County Coroner Ken Lederhouse was summoned to the scene.
Few details about the incident have been released. It is unclear how fast the vehicle was traveling at the time. The speed limit on North Canal Road is 55 mph.
The woman’s name had not been released as of press time.
