Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — The body of an 86-year-old man was discovered in the Erie Canal near Widewaters Marina Monday morning.
The Lockport police have identified the Lockport resident but are witholding the victim's name pending notification of family.
According to the report, the victim had taken a cab from his residence to the marina on the canal path about 10 a.m. No one reported seeing the man enter the water, but two women walking the path spotted the man's walker and a New York Yankees baseball cap near the rocky shoreline just east of Matt Murphy Way in a canalside park.
The victim's body laid, face down, floating next to the rocks. They called 911 at 11:49 a.m.
The body was removed from the canal by the Lockport Fire Dept. under the direction of Niagara County Coroner Ken Lederhouse.
An autopsy is scheduled at Erie County Medical Center today.
The incident remains under investigation.
