TOWN OF TONAWANDA: Fundraiser is today for Kenmore shooting victim
TOWN OF TONAWANDA — Friends and family of Kenmore native Kiele Coleman, who was shot while riding in a car in North Buffalo on March 16, are holding a benefit today to help the 22-year-old pay her mounting medical bills.
Coleman and her friend, Frank Militello, 26, of Buffalo, were driving down St. Lawrence Avenue in North Buffalo on March 16 when police say back seat passenger Adrienne March opened fire with a pistol. March surrendered to police days later and now faces first- and second-degree attempted murder charges.
When Kiele’s father, Bob, arrived at the Erie County Medical Center, he was informed that things did not look good. Doctors told Kiele’s mother, Anita Coleman, that even if her daughter survived, they believed the damage to her brain would be severe. But that didn’t matter to the family, as long as Kiele pulled through.
“I told them, ‘I’ll take her any way I can get her. If she doesn’t walk, talk, whatever. As long as she’s alive,’ ” Anita said.
Kiele spent almost three weeks in a medically-induced coma and almost three months in intensive care at the Erie County Medical Center. But over the following weeks, she showed steady and slow signs of improvement.
Six months later, Kiele is walking, something doctors believed she might never do again. But getting to that point hasn’t been easy, or inexpensive. Friends and family are holding a fundraiser for the Coleman family to help pay the cost of Kiele’s recovery.
The event will run from 1 to 7 p.m. today at Lincoln Park Arena, 1200 Parker Boulevard, Town of Tonawanda.
