BUFFALO — Niagara County Sheriff's Deputy Allen Gerhardt is out of surgery as of midnight Tuesday and recovering in the ICU in stable condition at Erie County Medical Center. Sheriff James R. Voutour said the doctors are pleased and said the surgery went well.
Two fellow deputies are credited with saving the life of Gerhardt, who was seriously injured responding to a call early Monday morning.
Gerhardt was answering a fellow deputy’s call for assistance about 1:30 a.m. and lost control of his patrol car, striking a guard rail near 2594 Lake Road. The rail sliced cleanly through Gerhardt's cruiser, severing his legs.
Voutour said it’s possible Gerhardt was going around another car when he lost control of his patrol car.
Gerhardt was found unconscious by Deputies Jonathan Andres and Shawn Grapes who used their belts as tourniquets to stem the flow of blood.
“Al regained consciousness with the tourniquets on and then we just waited and prayed,” Andres said.
Gerhardt served in Iraq. His wife credits Andres and Grapes with saving her husband's life.
“They're really his angels and we can’t thank them enough,” Tina Gerhardt said.
Voutour agreed that their actions saved Gerhardt’s life.
The deputies had been responding to an accident involving Todd M. Hauser, 35, of 2541 Youngstown-Lockport Road. Reports say he struck a parked vehicle and fled the scene on foot but was later caught by Lewiston police.
Hauser pleaded not guilty Tuesday night in Porter Town Court to DWI, leaving the scene of an accident and making an unsafe lane change. He's due back in court Aug. 2.
While Voutour said the district attorney’s office is looking in to additional charges for Hauser relating to Gerhardt’s crash, Hauser’s attorney said Tuesday his client is not responsible for the deputy’s accident.
