LOCKPORT —
An 18-year-old man has drowned following a fall into the Erie Canal Wednesday night, according to Lockport Police.
Capt. Brian Wentland said the victim was fishing with friends when he fell into the water. The friends called police at about 9:51 p.m. Wednesday.
“The friends stated he fell in and did not resurface,” Wentland said.
Along with Lockport Police, Niagara County Sheriff’s Department and the New York State Police responded to the scene. The intersection of Exchange and Market Streets were blocked off from traffic, but crowds gathered around the intersection.
Wentland said the search was hampered by murky water as well as an undertow near the Exchange Street Bridge. The victim fell in near the bridge.
The sheriff’s underwater response team swept the canal, along with police boats until the victim’s body was found just before midnight. Police said the victim’s name was being withheld pending notification of the family.
