Roy-Hart to play the big stage

Mixed chorus to play before BPO concert

A group of local students will be performing this month at Kleinhans Music Hall just before a BPO concert.

The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra will welcome the Royalton-Hartland High School Mixed Chorus as part of the BPO’s Community Spotlight program on Feb. 19 at Kleinhans in Buffalo. The chorus will perform under the direction of Carolyn Unitas Roos and accompanied by Janice McKinney.

The Royalton-Hartland High School Mixed Chorus will be performing at 1:45 p.m. in the Mary Seaton Room. That will be followed by the BPO’s performance at 2:30 p.m. in the Family Concert Symphony Express in the Main Hall.

The program features school, college and community performance groups in a pre-concert performance before select BPO concerts. As part of the Community Spotlight program, all pre-concert performers will receive a free ticket to the BPO concert that follows, and deeply discounted tickets are available for friends, family and community supporters.

People can order discounted tickets by calling the BPO Box Office at 885-5000 and mentioning Community Spotlight to receive $21 adult tickets and $6 student tickets. For family concerts, the discount price is $8 for all tickets.

The Roy-Hart Senior High Mixed Chorus is a vocal ensemble that performs a variety of genres, introducing the school and community to different cultures and styles of music.

In addition to the full ensemble, Roy-Hart boasts a smaller, more select group that was established in 2011. Known as “Roy-Hart & Soul,” this group has performed in the community, as a guest artist at Roy-Hart High School Music Department concerts and will also be featured in the Feb. 19 concert at Kleinhans Music Hall.

In 2010, Roy-Hart was named one of the NAMM Foundation’s “Best Communities for Music Education,” a designation based on the quality of the district’s music program.
