TASTE: 2009 Taste of Lockport will feature new vendors, more wineries
A Lockport summertime favorite is returning Sunday with some new things to offer.
From noon until 6 p.m. Sunday people will flood Ida Fritz Park for the annual Taste of Lockport. More than 30 vendors will line up at Ida Fritz, located where Main Street breaks into Park and West Avenues for a day of food, drinks and music. The popular outdoor event gives local businesses a chance to show off some of their best dishes or drinks.
This year about 10 vendors are making their first appearance at the Taste. One in particular is Udder Delights, a homemade ice cream parlor on Route 31 in Gasport. Owner Sharon Palladino said although Udder Delights has been around for 20 years, this will be its first Taste experience.
“People around here talked me into it,” Palladino said. “We decided we would give it a try, we’ve never done this before. There are a lot of people who go to it, so it’ll be good exposure for our ice cream. We’re looking forward to it.”
Palladino said Udder Delights would be bringing strawberry sundaes and Mississippi malt ice cream to the Taste.
There will also be “walking sticks” available at Udder Delights’ booth, which is hard ice cream dipped in gourmet chocolate.
“You can walk and eat it,” Palladino said.
It’s not the first time at the Taste of Lockport for Cousins Cafe on Market Street. The restaurant is making its return after a few years’ absence, said Diane Camarra. Camarra said she flipped a coin three times to help decide whether or not to participate in this year’s event.
“We were in it a couple of years ago,” she said. “It just kept coming up heads.”
Cousins Cafe will be showing off its Rueben chowder, bread pudding, chicken souvlaki and meatball sandwiches. And they’ll be bringing strawberry shortcake for dessert.
Other first timers at this year’s Taste include The Winery at Marjim Manor, Spring Lake Winery, the Niagara County Farm Bureau, Leonard Oakes Estate Winery, Honeymoon Trail Winery, Carson’s Country Deli & Bakery, Carmella’s Italian Kitchen and Becker Farms & Vizcarra Vineyards.
The number of wineries that are participating was something that stood out to Jeannie Wolf, Taste of Lockport event coordinator. Along with the five new wineries, there are also Freedom Run Winery, Niagara Landing Wine Cellars and Schulze Vineyards & Winery who are all returning as vendors this year.
“It’s really exploded this year,” Wolf said. “We’ve got a little wine trail.”
The rise of the wineries has led to two new award categories, Best Red Wine and Best White Wine. Of course there will be the usual categories, Best Appetizer, Best Sandwich, Best Entree, Best Dessert and People’s Choice. All of the vendors will accept cash and no tickets will be needed, Wolf said.
“So bring singles,” she said.
