NEWFANE: Senior citizens await Town Hall and Community Center
NEWFANE — The Newfane Golden Age Club is ready to move into a bigger home, warmed up by 21st century technology.
The Town Hall and Community Center, which has been delayed a few months, may be ready to open by mid-February. The $2.1 million project that began in the summer of 2008 is nearly complete.
The town of 9,600, which has outgrown its 50-year-old town hall on Transit Road, bought the former Miller Hose Fire Hall at 2737 Main St. and brought it up to state-of-the-art status.
“I can’t wait to get in,” said Wanda Mandhardt, director of the Golden Age Club. “It’s very nice. It’s well laid out. The architect did an excellent job. It’s very light, very warm and very airy.”
The renovations include a solar system and geothermal heat/cooling system from Mitsubishi. That means every room has its own thermostat, Supervisor Tim Horanburg said. There are 15 rooms, and everyone can set the temperature for what they want. The building is as green as we can get it.”
The project had several small delays. There was more asbestos than expected, and the doors did not arrive on time. Some of the heating units for the Mitsubishi inversion system got lost en route from Japan.
“The heating units held us up the most,” the supervisor said.
The Golden Age Club, which is 50 years old, will be able to use the big community room, which can accommodate 210 people. Mandhardt, who has been in the club for 30 years, hopes to expand the club’s activities.
“We’ve been low key for a year,” she said. “The town is very generous with the senior population. They take very good care of us.”
She envisions a social day during the week and an Wii exercise program. The Golden Agers will be able to use the kitchen, too.
Mandhardt also will have a place to store extra gear. “It’s all in my house,” she said. “We’ve accumulated a lot of things.”
