Pair to be honored at Co-op

LOCKPORT — The 16th Annual Black History Program sponsored by the Lockport New Beginnings, Inc. will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Center on Lake Avenue.

Former Niagara County Legislator, Renae Kimble will receive the Person of the Year Award and Desiree Wiley will be awarded the Young Woman’s Achievement Award.

Wiley, a Lockport native, attends Buffalo State and was Miss Buffalo in 2011. She was third runner-up in the Miss New York State competition.

Kimble, a Democrat from Niagara Falls, was the Deputy Minority Leader of the Legislature.

The theme for the event is “Black Women in American History and Culture: What’s Our Future?”

The Rev. Lora Allen, the Associate Pastor of the Bethany Baptist Church in Niagara Falls, is the guest speaker. Allen, the recipient of the YWCA’s Public Service Award in 2009, been a keynote speaker and presenter at seminars and conferences at religious and business organizations.

Allen, Niagara County Democratic Deputy Commissioner for the Board of Elections, is involved in the development of training programs for religious and business organizations.

Tickets are $22. There will be a raffle for a 46-inch flat screen TV and proceeds will benefit the Lockport New Beginnings Building Fund. The African American Dance Troupe of Buffalo will perform.
