Man takes own life after chase

LOCKPORT — A 35-year-old Lockport man took his own life Tuesday morning on Hoover Parkway despite police efforts to stop him.

Joshua Verity was taken to Eastern Niagara Hospital, Lockport by the Lockport Fire Department Rescue where he was pronounced dead a short time after his self-inflicted injuries.

Lockport Police received a call at 9:38 a.m. in which a female caller reported a man who was trying to harm himself with a butcher knife. The police pursuit started on Lincoln Avenue and extended on foot for several blocks before Verity was located on Hoover Parkway, armed with the knife.

Verity cut himself with a knife while running. He stopped and repeatedly stabbed himself in the neck area despite officers entreaties to stop.

A department hostage negotiator attempted to talk with Verity. Police repeatedly attempted to get close enough to disarm Verity, but were unable to approach him due to his extremely violent action.

Officers were finally able to get close enough to deploy a Taser, but by that time he had cut himself again.

On April 15, Verity was injured in a fatal accident on Route 31 near Old Shawnee Road. The driver, Christine George of Niagara Falls, was ejected from her seat and died in the accident. Verity was a passenger in the car.
