Bowling club officer accused of stealing funds

Police have accused the secretary of Lockport Bowling Boosters Club with stealing over $5,000 from the club.

Cheryl A. Wright, 50, of the Town of Lockport, was charged with third-degree grand larceny and falsely reporting an incident Thursday, after an investigation by the Niagara County Sheriff’s Department and Lockport Police Department.

Wright allegedly falsely filed a report claiming $4,000 cash had been taken from her home earlier this month.

She filed her report with the sheriff’s department about the same time another booster club member filed a report with LPD indicating over $5,000 was missing from the club.

Investigation suggested Wright’s home was not burgled and her claim “was an attempt to cover up the theft of the Bowling Boosters money,” a Friday press release from the sheriff’s department said.

Investigators believe the money was taken from the club over a one- to two-year period, sheriff’s Capt. Kristen Neubauer said.

The club raises money to pay for items including trophies and award banquets associated with the Lockport High School bowling team.

Wright was released on her own recognizance and is due back in Town Court on Dec. 13.
