Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — TOWN OF TONAWANDA — Two people were arrested Tuesday morning following a SWAT team raid on a Town of Tonawanda motel, during which police and three young children were showered with heroin one suspect was trying to destroy.
Indaleccio Rodriguez-Escalera, 22, and his girlfriend Melissa Rosario, 22, both of Buffalo, were arrested at the Economy Inn located at 40 Grand Island Blvd.
When the SWAT team entered the motel room to execute a search warrant, Rodriguez-Escalera jumped out of bed and threw a handful of heroin around the room in an attempt to destroy evidence.
But the drug showered Rosario’s three small children in the room, who were sitting on a motel bed that became covered with the drug. The children are between the ages of three years and three months and due to the exposure to the narcotic, were sent to Women and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo for evaluation.
After throwing the heroin, Rodriguez-Escalera then attempted to take an unknown object from the motel’s desk into the bathroom.
“He did not obey with verbal commands to get down on the ground,” the police report states.
The suspect then began physically fighting with Lt. William Krier. Officers believed it was possible the object in Rodriguez-Escalera’s hand was a weapon, and another officer intervened, punching Rodriguez-Escalera in the mid-section.
Both Rodriguez-Escalera and Rosario were charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession with intent to sell, endangering the welfare of a child and reckless endangerment.
The pair were arraigned in town court on the charges Tuesday night.
Rordiguez-Escalera is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail and Rosario was released to her parents. Both were due back in court for a felony hearing Wednesday afternoon.
Police did not experience any symptoms from heroin exposure during the arrest, but were wearing protective material over their mouths.
Hospital officials did not have any update on the children’s conditions.
