LOCKPORT —
On Sept. 26, the pastors of the First AME Church and First English Lutheran Church will switch pulpits for Sunday services.
The Rev. Sam Bell of First AME Church will lead 10 a.m. services at First English Lutheran Church. Rev. Flavia Skilbred of First English Lutheran will lead services at the First AME Church at 11 a.m.
“We went to handbell concert, kicked things around and talked about,” Bell said Tuesday. “We decided to go ahead and do it and get things coming together in Lockport, more than we have been.”
The First AME Church is on 123 South St. and the First English Lutheran Church is nearby on 185 Locust St.
They are different denominations with different services. “Ours is simple, the Lutheran service is different,” said Bell who has been pastor since October. “We have to go over that. My main object is to preach the gospel. They have their own outline.”
Skilbred is a New York City native who came to Lockport six years ago.
“It’s not unusual to have a pulpit exchange,” she said. “Pastors spend more time get to know each other and their congregation and to work together ecumenically. It’s better for the community.”
This is the first time the pulpit exchange is done between the two Lockport churches.
Skilbred and Bell are getting together on Friday, but will not edit each other sermons. There will be no communion at the Lutheran Church on Sept. 26, but a Service of the Word.
“We are not imposing who we are on them,” Skilbred said.

Unemployment in the Lockport area decreased slightly last month, but it wasn't because more people are going back to work.
The New York State Department of Labor reported Tuesday about 1,000 city residents were without a job in April, the fifth straight month with over 1,000 unemployed. That was down from the 1,100 it reported in March, however, the number of employed stayed the same at about 9,700 people.
