Electrical delivery companies report few issues during last week's storm

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — The winter storm that roared into the region form the Midwest and blanketed Niagara County with nearly a foot of snow in some locations on Wednesday and Thursday caused little damage to local electricity delivery systems.

National Grid and New York State Electric & Gas say there were few disruptions from the snow and high winds that accompanied the storm.

Figures from National Grid were not available, but preliminary data from NYSEG indicate the storm was responsible for approximately 2,600 service interruptions in the NYSEG service area and approximately 900 in the Rochester Gas & Electric service area.

“From the time our emergency planners began monitoring this storm late last week, we were concerned about wind and ice that could damage trees which would then affect our facilities,” said Mark S. Lynch, president of NYSEG and RG&E. “While few outages occurred as a result of the storm, we know we did the right thing in making detailed response plans, including securing more than 300 line and tree crews to be ready at a moment’s notice.”

Lynch said the advance work is all about being prepared to repair damage and restore any service interruptions safely and as quickly as possible.

Both companies assembled crews and support personnel who were packed and prepared to travel to hard-hit areas and ensured that chains were available for response vehicles that might have to travel through heavy snow.
