The 10th annual Taste of Lockport on Sunday at Ida Fritz Park might have been the best yet.
“It by far exceeded my expectations and I think everyone else’s too,” said Gary Chapman, who coordinated the Taste for the first time. “From what I hear from the board members, it’s a record-breaking attendance.”
Rain sprinkled vendors while they were setting up their booths in the morning, but it was mostly sunny and very warm the rest of the day.
“The music, entertainment has been great,” Chapman said before presenting the awards. “Some venders are running out of food and are back in the kitchen making more. It’s been crazy, but very fun.”
Garlock’s won for best entree and best appetizer. Newcomer Sweet Melodies of Clarence took the best dessert. The white wine prize was awarded to Chateau Niagara.
There was a western theme this year and Cammarata’s crew took the prize for the best decoration. The staff dressed in cowboy hats and trimmed the booth with red and blue hankies. A saddle rode the rail.
Sally Rouchala and Maryann Laffosse did all the decoration, Bob Cammarata said.
Garlock’s had a line all day, according to Mike Long. The South Transit Street restaurant served prime rib sandwiches, twice-baked potatoes, stuffed sea scallops and stuffed peppers.
“Everybody seems to like everything,” Long said. “Of course, the prime rib sandwich is always the best seller.”
That seemed to be the consensus of the crowd that had a choice of restaurants ready to serve.
“So far so good,” said first-timer Mandeep Singh of the Indian Grill. “People are loving it. I had a line ever since I stated.”
“We’re selling everything about equal,” said Bob Cammarata, who offered chicken Marcella, shrimp scampi, black and blue chowder and introduced an Italian cheeseburger with Italian cheese, roasted red peppers, spinach, fresh mozzarella and pesto sauce.
“We will run out about 5 o’clock” Cammarata predicted.
Nick Preskop, 7, had loganberry ice cream, fried dough, a bacon cheeseburger and chowder. “I think it’s all a tie,” the diplomat for George Southard said. The son of Debbie and Mike Preskop also had time to have a dragon painted on his face by the YMCA Team. The Preskops came with Mary and Gary Holverland of Tonawanda.
Dottie and Don Haenel of Cambria came dressed in red, white and blue USA caps. “There’s more people this year,” Dottie said. “Everything I’ve had I liked.”
Don had Mexican, mango chicken, a beer and ice cream.
The nine-person team from Crossroads Pizza, Wings & More of Wrights Corners entered the taste for the first time and wore red shirts. “We want to get our name out,” said Darryl Blumrick, who put his daughter and two sons to work behind the counter.
Brian Bower, president of the Lockport Business Association, said, “We had an excellent turnout. It’s better than last year I think.”

Jobless totals drop slightly
Unemployment in the Lockport area decreased slightly last month, but it wasn't because more people are going back to work.
The New York State Department of Labor reported Tuesday about 1,000 city residents were without a job in April, the fifth straight month with over 1,000 unemployed. That was down from the 1,100 it reported in March, however, the number of employed stayed the same at about 9,700 people.

Cutting the travel time
For the most part, there is a lot of planning that goes into traveling. Some like to handle the details on their own, making arrangements on the phone or using travel websites to book hotels, planes, vehicles and so on.
But lately, working with a travel agent is becoming more popular.
