Wilson wins N-O girls basketball showdown

Lakewomen top rival Newfane to take N-O lead

WILSON —

The Wilson girls basketball team broke a tie atop the Niagara-Orleans League girls basketball division on Wednesday night by defeating visiting rival Newfane, 56-28, in a mid-season battle of league unbeatens.
Head coach Brian Baker’s Lakewomen (7-0 N-O) outscored head coach Kevin Klumpp’s Lady Panthers (6-1 N-O) in all four quarters and never allowed more than nine points in a period.
Emily Lasher had 18 points and 10 rebounds to pace Wilson. Teammate Jamie Curry had a solid night, contributing 12 points, 10 assists and six steals. She also had nine points from 3-point range.
Baker praised the play of his team’s leaders.
“Lasher and Curry have had great seasons so far,” he noted. “They work hard and are always prepared. If one has a down night, the other one is there to pick us up.”
Baker also noted that though they led the team, it wasn’t just Lasher and Curry doing the scoring for the Lakemen in this particular contest. His squad spread the ball out offensively and nine different girls found the scoresheet.
“We had a lot of girls contribute,” Baker said. “We try to have a strong transition game. I tell our forwards that if you can get behind the defense, we have girls that can get you the ball and you should have an easy layup. If we can get some easy baskets and play strong defensively, we’re in good shape.”
Dana Smith added to Wilson’s team-oriented offense by scoring seven points. She also had eight rebounds and three blocks.
Wilson entered the game ranked No. 6 in the Western New York small school rankings and Newfane entered ranked No. 10, adding to the rivalry. Baker expected Newfane to be a tough opponent and was happy with how his team performed in a game of such magnitude.
“Their new coach did a great job and their team is very athletic and has been playing well,” Baker said. “They won a couple of games on three-point shots and I was pleased that we were able to limit them in three-point shooting and play good defense.”
Despite the big win, Baker assured that his team is taking it game-by-game.
“This was a huge win,” Baker said. “We’ve had our short-term goals, but you can’t look forward to the end of the year.”
