Secord sparks swim Lions past Bulldogs

VI qualifying winning times posted in two events by Lions' junior and teammates.

LOCKPORT —

It wasn’t just the fact that they won, but it was the way that Lockport beat visiting Kenmore East, 100-71, on Tuesday that was most impressive in the 2012-13 Niagara Frontier League boys swimming opener for both schools.
Head coach John Sullivan’s young, but talented Lions (1-0 NFL) posted several Class A and Section VI Meet qualifying times en route to a big win over the Bulldogs (0-1 NFL), led by double individual winner Derek Secord.
Secord, just a junior, blazed to a first-place finish in both the 50 freestyle (:22.94) and the 100 freestyle (:52.24), posting sectional-qualifying times in both victories.
There was more good news in the 50 free with Lockport sophomore John Patterson finishing second and junior Ben Kutnyak taking third to make it a sweep for the Lions. LHS swept the 100 as well with junior Shawn Moore in second and Kutnyak third.
The tall, promising swim prospect Moore went on to win the 100-yard backstroke in 1:07.91 in another blue and gold sweep as sophomore Mike Dmochowski placed second and junior Bryan Wojcinski was third.
Junior Scott Guyton touched first in the 200 individual medley in a Class A qualifying time of 2:18.24. Dmochowski was second.
Lockport’s other individual winner was senior diver diving Sean Kearns, one of the top three divers in the league this year, according to LHS diving coach Jasper Adams, who placed first with 248.70 points.
The Lions also won two of the meet’s three relays with Moore, Guyton, Secord and athletic junior Jack Whalen winning the 200 medley relay in a sectional qualifying time of 1:49.77. Lockport also placed third with Dmochowski, freshman Austin Hinton, junior Brian Wojcinski and Kearns (1:58.53).
Taking the 200 freestyle relay were Lockport junior Chris Lachell, Whalen, Patterson and freshman Austin Hinton (1:46.40). Lockport was second as well with junior Jeff Wojcinski, Kearns, Kutnyak and promising freshman Cole Twomey.
The Bulldogs earned four individual first-place finishes and the meet’s closing 400 freestyle relay.
Sophomore Graham Jones won the 200 free in 2:07.16. Lachell was second and Twomey was third for the Lions. Jones also won the 500 freestyle in 6:00.59 with Twomey in second.
Ken East junior Elijah Ramsey won the 100 butterfly with a sectional qualifying time of 1:00.01. Guyton was second and Wojcinski third for the Lions.
Bulldogs sophomore Matthew Peiffer took the 100 breast in a class qualifying time of 1:12.46. Whalen was third.
And with Lockport swimming exhibition in the 400 free relay, Ken East won with Peiffer, Jones, Ramsey and sophomore Jacob Steinborn (4:12.75). Lockport’s Guyton, Lachell, Moore and Secord swam the race in 3:49.21.
Lockport won the junior varsity meet, 121-17.
