Made to be broken

Lockport's Liz Connolly shatters 29-year-old 500 free LHS pool record

LOCKPORT —

It was a record-setting performance Friday night by Lockport sophomore swimmer Elizabeth Connolly.
Connolly shattered Lockport's 29-year-old 500 freestyle pool record of 5:20.06 by winning that event in 5:18.23. LHS senior teammates Karly Hartz and Danielle Dembrow were double individual winners, as the Lady Lions stayed unbeaten in the Niagara Frontier League, defeating visiting North Tonawanda, 100-48.
Connolly broke Maureen “Mo” Donato's record, which was set in the fall of 1983, beating it by almost two full seconds (1.83-second difference). Lady Lions head coach Kristen Smith called the feat, “an amazing accomplishment for a sophomore swimmer.”
Hartz was a winner in both the 100 freestyle (:57.63) and the 200 freestyle (2:05.56), while Dembrow touched first in both the 200 individual medley (2:22.93) and the 100 breaststroke (1:13.14).
Other individual winners for Lockport were senior Hailey Stapleton in the 50 freestyle (:26.56), senior diver Paige Kelkenberg (250.13 points) and sophomore Kristina Connolly in the 100 butterfly (1:04.80).
Lockport also took the 200 medley relay with swimmers Dembrow, sophomore Lauren Isherwood, junior Roserita DiMillo and senior Keeley Ralyea (2:11.21).
Miranda Cirrito of the Lady Jacks won the 100 backstroke in 1:32.06.
DiMillo, Kristina Connolly, and seventh grade teammates Katie Pollock and Megan Tatro all recorded personal best times against NT.

Next up, the Lady Lions (4-0 NFL) will host Kenmore West at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Marissa Watroba led the way for Niagara-Wheatfield to remain undefeated at 4-0 in league meets.
She scored individual victories in the 200-yard IM and 200-yard fly to compliment her victory on the 200-yard free relay team.
Sally Rozumalski also scored points for the Falcons with victories on a pair of relay teams as well as in the 500-yard freestyle.
Stefanie Stanton added a win in the 100-yard breaststroke by a full five seconds for Lew-Port (0-4 NFL).
