LOCKPORT —
The race to the 2012 Niagara Frontier League softball summit got a whole lot more interesting Friday with Niagara Falls' 8-3 victory over Lockport.
With the win, the Lady Wolverines not only knocked Lockport from the NFL's unbeaten ranks and gives both teams identical 7-1 league records heading to the homestretch, but it also avenged a 5-1 loss to the Lady Lions back on April 17 in Niagara Falls.
“They hit the ball well and errors hurt us today,” said Lady Lions head coach Julie Kwoka, as the two teams wore pink and purple jerseys in a special Softball Strikes Out Cancer Fundraiser under partly sunny skies at LHS.
Freshman first baseman Jerryann Forano led Niagara Falls, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs.
The visitors plated a run in the first, but so did the Lady Lions. Niagara Falls plated three more in the top of the second on four base hits.
Lockport cut the Falls lead to 4-2 with a run in the bottom of the fifth, but the Lady Wolverines plated four more in the top of the seventh to put the game away.
Nora Passuite (two hits) scored two runs and fellow senior Danielle Donorovich socked two triples and scored the other for Lockport.
Senior Emily Belfield cracked a double in two hits for the LHS and made a couple of nice running catches in center field. Junior Allie Cavagnaro also had two hits for LHS, which hosts Grand Island at 3:30 p.m. today.
