Lakemen down Fredonia in C North clash

Newfane and Barker/Roy-Hart bow in Friday night grid action.

WILSON —

Head coach Bill Atlas’ Wilson Lakemen continue to shine in a tough Section VI Class C North football division.
Losing last week by just a point, the Lakemen improved to 2-1 in the league on Friday night with a 20-7 victory over visiting   Fredonia at Walter J. Hutchison Stadium in a game that featured all the scoring in the first half.
Lakemen senior tailback Justin Slango opened the scoring in the first quarter with a 22-yard TD run. Slango finished with   17 rushes for 93 yards and a score.
Fredonia scored on a one-yard run to open the second and added the PAT to lead 7-6, but Wilson took the lead for good moments   later when junior quarterback Tim Walch (6-for-12 passing, 156 yards, TD) hit senior wide receiver Will Hall on a 79-yard   scoring pass play. The kick failed, but Wilson led, 12-7.
Later in the second, Lakemen senior linebacker Steve Szuba picked up a Fredonia fumble and ran 24 yards to pay dirt. Slango’s   two-point conversion run rounded out the scoring.
Also for Wilson senior receiver Tayler Thilk had two catches for 32 yards, while defensively, Szuba finished with six tackles.   Senior Colin Spatorico led the defense with a dozen stops.
The Wilson D also contributed three interceptions, courtesy of Thilk and seniors Joe Brown and Nick Bell.
“That was a tough Fredonia team that we beat — a team that’s seen a lot of success the last couple of years,” Atlas said.   “We had a tough loss last week and we felt we didn’t play well, so this was a very big win for this program.”
Next week, the Lakemen play Cleveland Hill.

Depew 33,  Barker/R-H 14
MIDDLEPORT — On Homecoming at Bruno Pacini Field, head coach Bill Bruning’s Barker/Roy-Hart team led one of the top small   schools in Western New York by 14-0 in the second quarter, before the Wildcats erupted for 33 straight points to win it.

Defensively for Barker/Roy-Hart, Haight had nine tackles and an interception, senior Nick Burdick had eight tackles and senior   Travis Kelkenberg added seven stops.
The Wildcats remain unbeaten at 3-0.
