LOCKPORT —
Lockport senior Rob Arlington pitched and hit the Lions past visiting Niagara-Wheatfield, 8-5, in a Niagara Frontier League baseball contest under sunny skies Monday at Outwater Park.
Arlington fanned six and walked three to earn the complete-game victory and improve to 3-0 as a starter in the NFL.
“I felt good out there today. My curve ball was my out-pitch today,” said Arlington, who helped his own cause at the plate with a two-run triple and later an RBI single, as head coach Steve Styrzo's Lions improved to 9-3 in the NFL and are 11-4 overall.
“Danny (Bronson) called a good game. I only shook him off a couple of times the whole game,” Arlington added.
The visiting Falcons (7-5 NFL) opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the second
Greg Janese (triple, 2 RBIs) walked, then moved to second when Bailey Cadwallader reached base on an infield error. Nick Mattos singled to load the bases, then Keith Haseley socked a two-run single to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead.
As they've done throughout the season, the young Lions countered with a big inning of their own.
Senior centerfielder Nick DiMartile singled and stole second. After the sophomore catcher Bronson drew a one-out walk, Casey Domski cracked one over the left fielder's head to the wall. That loaded the bases and set the stage for Kyle Covell's RBI single and moments later, Arlington's two-run triple. When the smoke cleared, the Lions had plated four runs to lead 4-2.
Covell made a nifty play at short to double up the Falcons in the third, grabbing a one-out grounder toward the hole with a runner on first, touching second for the force then throwing to Brad Wroblewski at first for the double play to end the inning.
Lockport responded with four more runs in the bottom of the third to lead 8-2. DiMartile, Tyler Fraass and Bronson all walked and later scored as Arlington (2-for-4, triple, 3 RBIs) and Charlie Sobieraski delivered two-out RBI singles with runners in scoring position.
Cadwallader tripled to open the fourth, but Sobieraski made a great play at third, snaring Nick Mattos' hot grounder and firing to Bronson at the plate to get Cadwallader on the tag. Flyouts to Nate Schneider in left and DiMartile in center ended that threat.
The Falcons plated two in the fifth as Matthew Peters struck out swinging, but reached first on the ensuing passed ball. Anthony Oliveri singled then Janese drove home both Peters and Oliveri with a three-bagger.
Wheatfield plated one more run in the sixth as John Liberti singled then later scored on an error, but Arlington kept his composure and finished strong with a 1-2-3 Falcons seventh.
“Rob really pitched well for us today,” Styrzo said. “We're just not getting everyone hitting one through nine. We've had some glimpses, but it just hasn't been the case yet.”
The Lions posted a come-from-behind 9-8 won over Ken East on Saturday in a continuation NFL game. Noah VanDenBosch hurled the complete-game victory with six strikeouts. Bronson, Arlington, Fraass and Sobieraski all went 2-for-4 at the plate.
