Lions pin the Bulldogs

Seven pins, two tech falls turned in by mat Lions

LOCKPORT —

Nothing short of a dominating performance was turned in Wednesday by the Lockport wrestling Lions in their Niagara Frontier League opener.
Seven pins, two technical fall victories and three wins by decision by head coach Joe Scapelliti’s Lions propelled them to a 73-6 win over the visiting Kenmore East.
Josh Steinman (160 pounds), Marshall Taylor (220), Marcellus Hinton (285), Mark Cye (106), Thomas Wendt (113), Anthony Orefice (120) and Brad Feeney (138) all earned wins by fall for the blue and gold (1-0 NFL, 5-2 overall).
Steinman did away with Ken East’s Tyler Trondson in just 43 seconds in the second match of the night, while football standout Marshall Taylor followed moments later with his sixth pin of the young season, stopping Sam Koford of the Bulldogs in 1:49.
“I used a bear hug to his back and then used a chain to a stack,” said Taylor, now 7-0 overall on the season. “It was a good win to start the NFL season. I’ve been working hard in practice and the weight room with my brother, John.”
Hinton followed Taylor with a pin of Ken East’s Aaron Barrclough in 3:05, improving to 5-3 on the year. “I’ve been working hard on my undercooks with my coach (Shawn) Murray and the hard work has really been paying off. We’re a good team. We work hard in practice all the time.”
Cye pinned Ken East’s Jake Simmons in 35 seconds, Wendt stopped Mike Gavadin in 3:50 and state finalist Orefice improved to 7-0 this season by pinning Ben Ireland of the Bulldogs in just 33 ticks.
Orefice, who already has 100-plus career wins as a sophomore, used a leg cradle to end his match.
The senior Feeney, who’s looking to top 100 career wins this season — pinned Cody Orcutt in 1:09 of the first period. “I just came off of a take down. I tried to throw him, using his momentum to slam him and get the fall,” Feeney said.
Lions Dontay Gill (99) and Vince Eberhart (132) were impressive as well, earning technical fall victories over the their opponents. Gill beat John Dowdall of the Bulldogs in 4:00, while Eberhart (132) tossed around Ken East’s Jeremy Jacob before that match was stopped in 3:24.
Also for Lockport, Jose Pagan (152), Dylan Nuhn (182) and Chris Clay (126) earned decision wins.
Pagan defeated Austin Vendetta, 6-3; Nuhn beat Brandon Jamison, 4-1; and in the best match of the night, Clay bounced back in a big way to down Joe Dowdall of Ken East, 6-5.
“It was hard coming off a tough loss to Clarence the other day,” Pagan said. “But we knew we had to come back and fight. “We’re a small team, but we have to shoot it out as big as the best.”
Trailing 5-4 in the match’s closing seconds, Clay earned a two-point reversal, then held on to beat the tough Dowdall.
“Chris did a good job wrestling six minutes against one of the toughest kids in the Ken East line-up,” coach Scapelliti noted.
Rounding out Lockport’s 14 individual victories in 15 matches Wednesday, Matt Simpson (195) and Kirk Feeney (145) won by forfeit.
Earning the only win of the night for Ken East (0-1 NFL), Preston Smith pinned Doug Blazier in 3:01.
“I thought that our guys did what they should have done. We’re more experienced than they are,” Scapelliti said.
“Sometimes you have to wrestle down to the competition, but I thought we wrestled like veterans and the way we should have — pinning guys when they’re on their backs. I’m very pleased with our effort tonight.”
Next up, Lockport travels to North Tonawanda on Wednesday.
