Jacks tame the Lions

H.S. ROUNDUP (1/31/12): Newfane swimmers dominate at N-O Meet.

NORTH TONAWANDA — North Tonawanda’s Corey Mis scored eight of his game-high 18 points Tuesday to help spark a 23-7 run to close out the first half and help the Lumberjacks post a 65-56 Niagara Frontier League boys basketball win over visiting Lockport.

Down 51-45 entering the fourth, head coach Dave Gilson’s Lions (7-7 overall, 5-5 NFL) closed to within three early in the frame, but Jacks point guard Joe Curry was a perfect 4-for-4 at the line and 7-for-7 on the night to preserve the win.

Senior guard DiAntre Cullens led the Lions with 12 points. Senior Ezra Nwachukwu netted 11, senior Nick DiMartiule canned 10, junior James Chambers scored nine, sophomore Moziah Townsend had eight points and senior point guard Shaun Allen added six points.

“It was a hard-fought game both ways. Down the stretch, we needed to convert and we just didn’t get anything in the hoop,” Gilson said.

“Nothing really fell for us and on the offensive boards, obviously, we stopped crashing. What we did in the first quarter we didn’t bother to do the rest of the game.”

Next up, Lockport plays at Lewiston-Porter (4-6 NFL) at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Lancers beat Kenmore East, 54-39. Elsewhere in NFL boys hoops action Tuesday, Niagara Falls beat Niagara-Wheatfield, 58-32, and Ken West (9-1 NFL) topped winless Grand Island (78-54).
