ALBION —
Individual and team championships will be determined Saturday as Albion hosts the 2011-12 Niagara-Orleans League Wrestling Tournament, beginning at 9 a.m.
Newfane enters the dual meet and the title-deciding competition with a record of 6-0, while three-time defending champion Royalton-Hartland is close behind at 5-1. Wilson is currently in third place at 4-2 followed by Medina at 3-3.
Newfane last captured the N-O crown in 2005-06.
Seven defending champions are at the head of the field. That contingent includes the Roy-Hart quintet of Garrett Baugher, Zach Bickle, Matt McCauley, Drew Hull and Alex Jensen along with Medina’s Tristan Hamner and Barker’s Austin Blackley.
McCauley and Hamner are both four-time N-O champions, while Bickle has claimed a league title twice.
Hamner is ranked No. 1 in Western New York at 152 pounds, while Bickle (113), McCauley (138), Hull (145) and Blackley (220) are all ranked No. 2.
The field also includes 10 wrestlers who are taking aim at earning top honors after finishing in the runner-up spot a year ago. That group includes Nate Martin, Darius Matalavage, Steve Lakes and Max Russell from Newfane, along with Cameron Swick and Greg Johnston from Roy-Hart, Ben Howell and Matt Montesanti from Medina and Chase Wheeler and Cody Kaminska from Wilson.
Montesanti is currently ranked No. 3 in WNY at 285, while Johnston, Lakes and Matalavage are all honorable mention.
The quintet of Aaron Burnside (Albion), Jason Jolley (Newfane), Liam Bull (Wilson), CJ Ambrose (Medina) and Dereck Fuerch (Barker) also returns looking to improve on last year’s third-place finishes.
Jolley and Fuerch are both ranked honorable mention as are Baugher and Alex Jensen of Roy-Hart.
The finals are expected to begin between 3 and 4 p.m.
