Canal Cup stays home

Lax Lions down visiting NT, 12-2, in annual “Canal Cup” rivalry contest.

LOCKPORT — The Canal Cup stays put for a sixth straight year as the Lockport boys varsity lacrosse team sprinted past visiting North Tonawanda on Friday, 12-2, in their annual rivalry match at sunny LHS.

Senior David Craddock and juniors Zach Brown and Kyle Teeter netted  two goals apiece for head coach Scott Reddinger's team, which improved to 3-4.

“We felt good. Our philsophy this year has been 'play the game and then put it behind us.'  ” Reddinger said. “This week we had four games scheduled and we got three in. We just need to keep playing one game at a time.”

Seniors Aaron Quast, Austin Herman, Connor Barnes, Mike Black and Luke Hinton and juniors Zach Dewey also scored goals for the winners.

“We came out hard today. We just came off of a loss that we felt we should have had,” Brown said.

“Our coaches talked to us before the game and we were ready to come out and play hard. This win is a morale lifter for us. I think we'll go into the next game with high hopes.”

Dewey added three assists and Quast two for Lockport, which also got strong play from defender Glenn Cascia throughout.

“I played defense myself, so I know that you don't always get a lot of recognition. Glenn always defends the other team's best player,” Reddinger said. “He's one of the people we're hoping to build the program around in the coming years.”

Senior Brendan Gleave added, “If we run hard, fight hard and get the ground balls, things should turn out well for us.”

Tyler Lewis and Tom Simcoe netted goals for the Lumberjacks (0-9).

“This is still a game for us to look forward to and work for,” said Jacks coach Todd Faddoul, whose team dropped from Class A to B this year because of lower enrollment numbers.
