LOCKPORT —
Western New York officially “rained” in the spring season with a number of postponements on Monday, including Lockport High School baseball and softball games.
The highly-anticipated early-season NFL softball matchup between visiting Lockport and Kenmore West was postponed until 4:45 p.m. Friday. Lockport's baseball game Monday afternoon at Outwater Park against visiting Kenmore West was also rescheduled for 4:45 p.m. Friday. Both Lockport ball clubs are 2-0.
Other LHS sporting events postponed on Monday were the Niagara Falls at Lockport boys tennis match, which was rescheduled for 4 p.m. Wednesday, weather permitting.
Two Lions lacrosse matches on Monday also got rescheduled. The boys team will now play at Clarence at 5 p.m. on May 3, while the Lady Lions' match against visiting Grand Island was postponed until Noon on Saturday.
“Hey, it was going great for a while there, wasn't it?” Burke quipped, referring to the recent rash of 80-degree temperatures. “The grounds dried as quick as I can remember in March. Hopefully, this (rain) doesn't last too long.”
Also postponed on Monday was a full slate of Niagara-Orleans League baseball games (Roy-Hart at Medina, Albion at Barker, Newfane at Wilson and Akron at CSAT), while a full slate of N-O softball contests today (Newfane at Medina, Wilson at Barker, CSAT at Akron and Roy-Hart at Albion), all 4:45 p.m. starts, are also expected to be postponed. N-O track meets scheduled Tuesday (Medina at Wilson, Barker at Akron and Newfane at Roy-Hart) are also probable postponements.
According to the National Weather Service, rain (or snow, depending on where you live in Western New York) is in the forecast again today.
That will postpone a second straight LHS boys tennis match (4 p.m., at Lewiston-Porter), Lockport's boys and girls track meet against visiting Kenmore West (Max D. Lederer Field, already rescheduled for 4:30 p.m. Wednesday) and Starpoint's ECIC boys and girls track meet at Pioneer.
Cruising along in the NFL before the break in the weather, Lockport's baseball and softball skippers aren't as thrilled about the brief delay in their schedules as other teams, having gotten off to identical undefeated starts.
LHS softball head coach Julie Kwoka, whose team is 5-0 overall, said the delay sets the stage for three straight days of league games, Wednesday (Lewiston-Porter, home), Thursday (Niagara-Wheatfield, home) and Friday (at Kenmore West), all 4:45 p.m. starts.
“It just makes the end of this week that much busier and makes games against two really good teams, Niagara-Wheatfield and Kenmore West, back-to-back games. We would have liked to play today, but obviously that wasn't going to happen.”
“Spring's always like this. You just have to be patient, play as they come and do your best every day,” Kwoka said.
