LOCKPORT —
The Lockport Lady Lions got strong pitching and timely hitting down the stretch Wednesday, bouncing back to beat visiting Lewiston-Porter, 10-5, topping Niagara Frontier League softball action.
With the win, head coach Julie Kwoka’s Lady Lions improved to 3-0 in the NFL and 6-0 overall.
LHS senior Kassidy McFall (6-0) was unhittable through the game’s final three frames, getting the Lady Lancers out 1-2-3 in each, while getting strong defensive support from everyone around her.
“We struggled a little at the beginning. I’d love to have that first inning back, but we’ve just got to pick ourselves back up and get ready for games in the next two days,” said Lady Lancers head coach Nina Calarco.
After Lew-Port (1-3 NFL, 4-3 overall) scored two runs in their half of the first, Lockport responded with four in the bottom half — all with two outs.
Senior center fielder Emily Belfield got things started, drawing a walk, then consecutive walks to seniors Danielle Donorovich, Kelly McKeever and Patti Burdick and junior Shannon Krywcun tied the game at 2-2.
LHS freshman Jordyn Kwoka gave the hosts the early lead with a clutch single to right, plating McKeever and the roadrunner Burdick.
“She threw me a low pitch to the outside, so I took it to right,” Jordyn Kwoka said. “It was my first start in right field and it was a good win for us today.”
Lew-Port threatened in the second, but with runners on first and second and one out, Donorovich made a nice catch in left, then threw to junior Allie Cavagnaro at third — where the base runner had left for home at the crack of the bat — for an inning-ending double play.
Belfield socked a triple somewhere near the tennis courts, but Lockport could not plate a run in their half of the second. McFall got the Lady Lancers out 1-2-3 in the top of the third, but Lockport went 1-2-3 as well.
Lew-Port garnered the lead for the last time with three runs in the top of the fourth. Teresa Fleckenstein brought all three runs home with a clutch, two-out triple to deep left.
The Lady Lions responded with two runs in their half of the fourth to take the lead for good. Kelsey Stamates singled, reached second on an error and scored on senior catcher Nora Passuite’s single up the middle. Now on third, Passuite reached home with the eventual winning run on an error.
With McFall peaking in the late innings and the LHS infield gobbling every grounder up, all’s that was left was a few insurance runs for the blue and gold.
They got one run in the fifth. With two outs, Burdick walked, then scored on Krywcun’s double and second RBI of the game to make it 7-5 Lockport.
“Lew-Port really came out to play today, but we didn’t let anything rattle us. We know we were capable of hitting the ball and coming back,” coach Kwoka said. “And my defense played well.”
The Lady Lions exploded for three more runs in their half of the sixth to put the game away. Stamates, Passuite (single) and Cavagnaro (single) all crossed the plate to round out the scoring.
“Nora’s been my catcher since JV. We have a great pitcher-catcher relationship,” McFall said. “My teammates played great defense behind me and helped me with everything.”
Burdick has played errorless ball at short through six games for LHS. “I want to give my teammates the confidence of knowing I won’t let them down,” said Burdick, who finished with five assists on the day at the six spot.
Next up for the Lady Lions are league matchups against Niagara-Wheatfield (4:45 p.m. today, home) and Kenmore West (4:45 p.m. Friday, at KW).
