Shaun “Smiley” Allen spreads the wealth in Lockport win

GATINEAU, Quebec — Shaun Allen didn’t just inject a little spark into the Lockport Lions’ offense on Friday night, he lit the V-2 Rocket.

Allen spread the wealth throughout, scoring 10 points, adding five steals and seven assists — but most importantly, injecting significant and much-needed fire into the blue and gold offense — in Lockport’s 53-37 win over visiting Niagara-Wheatfield, topping Niagara Frontier League boys basketball action.

“Hats off to Lockport. They’re a big, athletic team,” said Falcons head coach Erik O’Brien, a former NFL cage great at North Tonawanda and proud father.

“With Shaun in their line-up, they have a chance to do some good things.”

Playing in just his third game this season, Allen made his presence known immediately, draining two, 3-point shots and another lay-up off a steal as Lockport got off to a good start, leading 17-11 at the end of the first quarter.

“He’s a true point guard and gives us something we’ve needed all season,” said LHS head coach Dave Gilson. “He sees the entire floor very well and gets everyone involved. I think offensively, we’re starting to come around and we’re cleaning up the glass. I hope it continues.”

Lions senior guard DiAntre Cullens (team-high 12 points, four rebounds) drained his second three-pointer of the game to open the second quarter as the Lions built a double-digit lead they would hold the rest of the way.

Meanwhile, high-flying Lions senior center Nick DiMartile (10 points, game-high 17 rebounds) controlled everything around the basket, while the court-savvy Allen (7 assists, five steals) controlled the tempo of the game.

The Falcons countered with big Jack Mulcahy (game-high 21 points, five rebounds), who drove hard to the basket throughout and added a nice shooting touch from the outside. Mulcahy hit two tres and finished with 12 points in the first half, but the Lions led at intermission, 35-21.

“I’m hard on Jack, but he’s been outstanding for us,” O’Brien said. “But to play the way that we did in the first half is unacceptable to anyone who plays in the Niagara-Wheatfield basketball program. We came back and fought hard in the second half and got back on defense, but when you lose, you’ve got nothing to fall back on.”

Gilson substituted frequently throughout and got strong play up and down the bench, especially in the second half, from Colin Dougherty (2 points, 2 steals), James Chambers (2 points), Moziah Townsend (3 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists), Ryan Lawrence (3 rebounds), Tylor Holtz (six points), Khari Demos (rebound, block) and Marquise Sutton (two rebounds, steal), who showed tremendous hustle at both ends of the court.

“I just try to get everyone the ball. I try to be a floor general when I’m out there. Tonight, everyone did their job,” Allen said.

Ken West 60, N. Falls 53

NIAGARA FALLS — For the second straight season, the Kenmore West boys basketball team pushed Niagara Falls to the brink on its home court. This time, with Martin Bailey leading the way, the Wolverines went tumbling over the edge.

It was the Falls’ first NFL loss since the 2009-10 season, when North Tonawanda swept both meetings against the Giulio Colangelo-led Wolverines.

Martin Bailey led Ken West (10-2, 8-1 NFL) with 26 points, seven rebounds and three assists on Friday, including 13 points in the fourth quarter to seal the win. Bailey hit four of six free throws down the stretch as the Wolverines couldn’t get closer than a three-point deficit in the game’s final two minutes.
