Lady Falcons win battle of NFL unbeatens

Beatty's Lady net Lions drop just first match of the season

LOCKPORT —

In a battle of Niagara Frontier League girls tennis unbeatens Thursday, Niagara-Wheatfield knocked off Lockport, 4-1.
“It just so happened that two undefeated teams met at the end of the first round of the schedule,” said Lockport's veteran head coach John Beatty, who's had strong play through to mid-season from his core players, including senior co-captains Katie Britt and Adrienne Folby.
“Katie's been playing very well right up to and including today. She just ran into a buzz saw today. Katie played her tough, but there were a lot of points that went the distance and the Wheatfield player won a lot of those. I think a little more experience could have been the difference in her match today.”
“Adrienne has been our steady rock now for three years and this year, moved up from third to second singles. She's just a hard-working kid who gives you everything all the time. While Katie's an aggressive style player, Adrienne's a steady backcourt player who's hard to beat no matter what.”
The Lady Falcons (7-0 NFL) swept the singles competition over Lockport (6-1 NFL) on Thursday, as Liz Barrett defeated Britt, 6-3, 6-0 at first singles, Bri Fiorita downed Folby at second singles, 6-1, 6-3; and Karyn Kalita beat Lockport eighth grader Delaney Portka at third singles, 6-2, 6-0.
Britt and Folby won their singles matches on Wednesday as the Lady Lions posted a 4-1 victory at Lewiston-Porter. Britt defeated Lew-Port's Brittany Mezuhr, 6-3, 6-3, while Folby beat Madison Lindsay, 6-1, 6-0.
Lockport and Niagara-Wheatfield split their doubles matches on Thursday. Frannie Viola and Lila Trunzo of the Lady Falcons beat LHS juniors Morgan Haley and Kathryn Krawczyk at first doubles, 6-1, 6-0, while at second doubles, Lockport seniors Amanda Schrader and Alex Costello bested Nicole Dworzanski and Kalie Lazarou, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.
Against Lew-Port on Wednesday, Haley teamed up with Shchrader at first doubles to beat Gabe Portka and Rachel SanGiacomo, 6-3, 6-3, while at second doubles, Krawczyk and Costello beat Sara Kelly and Ahigeul Nashwinter, 6-3, 6-0.
“Basically through the first round, we've kept Morgan at first doubles and Alex at second doubles, then alternated Amanda and Kathryn around, not because because any one player is stronger than the other, but they compliment the other player they play with," Beatty said.
“It's one of those things where we've been able to give teams different looks because Amanda is extremely strong at the net, Kathryn has a beautiful crosscourt volley shot that's tough to return.”
Next up for the Lady net Lions is a league match at Grand Island at 4 p.m. Monday.
