LPD gets to bottom of arrest

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — Lockport police needed the assistance of the staff at Eastern Niagara Hospital-Lockport to help them arrest a city man who allegedly stashed marijuana in his rectum.

Edward K. Washburn, 34, 80 Genesee St. Apt. 1-4 was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana Tuesday.

According to police, Washburn was seen walking toward another person on Genesee Street at 7 p.m. when the other party threw garbage on the street corner. Police stopped to question both people. While speaking with Washburn, the police saw that Washburn was extremely nervous.

During questioning, police learned that Washburn had an unknown about of marijuana in his rectum. He was taken to police headquarters where he unsuccessfully attempted to retrieve the marijuana.

Washburn was then taken to Eastern Niagara Hospital-Lockport where the staff was able to remove a clear Ziplock bag from his rectum.

The bag contained 10 individually wrapped bags of marijuana, each weighing about one ounce and another plastic bag containing about two ounces of green leafy vegetable matter. It field tested positive for marijuana. The bags were placed into evidence.

The street name for concealing drugs in one's rectum is "boofing," according to Lockport Police Chief Larry Eggert.

"Sometimes you boof too much, you get a little antsy," Eggert said. "I never had that much volume of marijuana (hidden in a body cavity) before."

Washburn was charged at police headquarters and released on an appearance ticket.
