Driver faces Leandra charge

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — A 26-year-old Lockport woman faces felony driving while intoxicated charges after being stopped with an infant in her car at 5 p.m. Thursday on Washburn Street.

Bethany A. Turner, 26, 218 Washburn St. Apt. 3 was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, DWI, aggravated unlicensed operation, unreasonable speed, an equipment violation and criminal possession of a controlled substance.

The police observed the vehicle on Washburn Street traveling at a high rate of speed for the area and conditions. Turner then abruptly  put on the brakes, nearly passing through the red light at Wasburn and High streets.

According to the report, Turner appeared overly nervous and was shaking. She had red, glassy eyes and slurred speech. A background check showed that Turner’s drivers license was under suspension. She failed field sobriety tests.

Turner was found to be in possession of morphine pills and suboxone strips. She said she consumed the narcotices a short time before entering the vehicle, the report said.

The driver’s infant was secured in the back seat. The baby was picked up by her father.

Under the state’s 2009 Child Passenger Protection Act, known as Leandra’s Law, it is an automatic felony to drive drunk with a person age 15 or younger inside the vehicle.
