LOCKPORT —
A Middleport woman was sentenced to five years probation Monday afternoon in Niagara County Court to an October prescription medication theft.
Natalie Christina Godfrey, 28, 8 Robertson St., Apt. 2, pleaded guilty in January to a reduced charged of third-degree attempted burglary after she reportedly stole prescription medication from her mother’s Birchwood Drive, Town of Lockport, home last summer.
She was originally charged by Niagara County Sheriff’s deputies with illegal entry of a dwelling, fourth-degree criminal mischief, endangering the welfare of a child, third-degree menacing and petit larceny.
According to a report, Godfrey — a mother of three — entered the Birchwood Drive residence and took several medicines from her mother who was fighting cancer. She reportedly entered the home by breaking a screen and window pane.
Godfrey allegedly made threats that she had a gun and would cause bodily harm to the victim and a juvenile who was in the care of the victim.
Godfrey was remanded to Niagara County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bail.
In court on Monday, the victim told Judge Matthew J. Murphy III she thought Godfrey should get a second chance and blamed the suspect’s actions on her husband.
“I don’t think she was there to harm anyone,” the victim said.
Both Godfrey and the victim said Godfrey’s husband coerced Godfrey into breaking into the home and using drugs.
“Your husband is bad news and you should stay away from him,” Murphy then told Godfrey.
Murphy also ordered Godfrey to spend 15 months in a substance abuse program. If she violates her probation, Murphy said she could be sent to state prison.
