Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — City man admits

to insurance scam

A city man was sentenced Thursday to five years of probation for forging notes from a doctor in order to keep receiving disability checks, after recovering from injuries suffered in a vehicle accident.

Matthew J. Luke, 27, of Chapel Street, was sentenced by Niagara County Judge Sara S. Farkas for fourth-degree insurance fraud. Luke also must repay $14,969 to State Farm Insurance, which he collected between May 2010 and September 2011.

Luke pleaded guilty to the charge in September.

Stolen laptop could lead to year in jail

A city man is looking at a year in Niagara County Jail for taking a laptop and trading it for video games.

Jeremy Russell, 20, 77 Main St., Apt. 204, pleaded guilty Thursday for second-degree criminal trespassing and petit larceny, both class A misdemeanors. Russell appeared in front of Niagara County Judge Sara S. Farkas.

Russell admitted to entering a South Street home in September and taking a laptop computer. According to the police arrest report, Russell and Joseph J. Nicholson of Prospect Street took the computer and traded it for video games.

As part of the plea deal, Russell will pay $700 in restitution and cooperate with authorities against Nicholson. Nicholson is being screened for the court’s judicial drug diversion program.

Russell will return Feb. 6 for sentencing.
