BUSINESS: Spending $20 on the 20th aims to boost local economy

According to the 2000 U.S. Census, there are 22,279 people in the City of Lockport and 19,653 people in the Town of Lockport. If every person spent just $20 in the community on just one day, it would generate about $838,640 in revenue for the local economy.

With 214,464 people, spending $20 locally would put $4,289,280 back in Niagara County.

The Union-Sun & Journal is encouraging everyone to spend $20 within the community Saturday. For the “Spend $20 on June 20th” event, a number of local businesses will have sales and special promotions. The Spend $20 on 20th event is a partnership between the Union-Sun & Journal and local businesses, designed to increase the number of customers and entice them to spend their money locally. In Thursday’s paper, there will be a special three-page section for offers and sales from participating businesses throughout Eastern Niagara County. The idea of the ad section is to promote products or services that are $20 or less.

George Fritz is the owner of Mills Jewelers on Main Street, which is one of about 50 local businesses participating Saturday. Two items that will be showcased for the event are a freshwater pearl and sterling silver pendant and earrings. They were designed by his daughter, Heather Fritz.

“We have a lot of things that are under $20,” Fritz said.

Union-Sun & Journal Publisher Diane Crowe said the idea for the “Spend $20 on June 20th” event came from a sister paper within the company. The Union-Sun & Journal is owned by Community Newspapers Holdings Inc.

“Anytime there’s something successful done at another paper, corporate passes it along,” Crowe said. “We thought it was something we could do. And with this economy, it is even more critical for people to put money back in their own communities.”

Fritz said it is extremely important for people to spend money locally. Besides, residents can find a number of advantages and quality products shopping in their community than shuffling off to the nearest metropolitan area or large store.

“If they spend a little time, people will see they don’t have to go to Buffalo or the large chain stores,” he said. “They’ll find better service, a better price at the independent local business.”
