Library adds online selections

LOCKPORT — Let’s say Santa surprises you with a Nook, Kindle or other e-reader on Christmas morning and you don’t know what to do with the newfangled gadget.

You like to read, but instruction books are not page turners.

The Lockport Public Library has an answer with a Christmas Technologies Open House from 9 a.m. to noon next Wednesday. The library on East Avenue is expanding its services with more e-books available to download from the library’s website. The expanded collection is being funded by a memorial donation for Dorothy Eadie. More than 2,000 titles are available.

Library card holders can check out and download e-books anytime, anywhere by visiting lockportlibrary.org. Patrons can download to a personal computer, Mac and many mobile devices, according to librarian Claire McDonough.

“It appeals to anyone who likes to read ... Readers who have devices, people who don’t want to wait,” said McDonough, who prefers real books. “Some people are gadget people, some are not.”

Readers do not have to go to the library, but can order a book anytime, even at 2 a.m.

Everybody may not prefer e-books, but it’s not just a generational fad. Many older readers have welcomed e-books and  McDonough said she has in-laws in their 80s who like the books on an electronic device.

E-books are borrowed from one to two weeks and do not have to be returned. Titles will automatically expire at the end of the lending period. There are no late fees. To renew, reapply.

Best-selling and classic titles available anytime, anywhere. Some of the books have multiple copies.

Jaqui McLaughlin is the project manager.

The library asserts there are hundreds of popular fiction and non-fiction titles to choose from, the collection is guaranteed to have something for everyone. Patrons can download best-selling novels, well-known classics, self-improvement guides, and  more. New titles are always being added to the collection.

To get started, click on “download e-books” at lockportlibrary.org, log in with your Lockport library card, browse, checkout and download.

Readers can also get help at the “Key” project desk. That’s Knowledge Employment and You.
