LOCAL WEATHER: Folks break out, enjoy advance of spring

Lockportians got the jump on spring Wednesday, walking, biking, jogging and taking a picnic break as the afternoon temperature pushed towards 50 degrees.

Jim Tobey of Wrights Corners broke out his motorcycle for the first time this year. “It wasn’t bad,” the railroad worker said. “It’s a little chilly, but it was nice to get out after a long winter. Good weather is getting here day-by-day.

Brandon Zamerski, 17, Keith Garvey, 17, and Eric Sember, 18, are students at Lockport High School who decided to jog around Davison Road and the country club before stopping at Reid’s for lunch. They were wearing shorts and short-sleeve shirts.

“I think it’s beautiful,” said Garvey, who was wearing a bandana around his forehead to keep his hair out of his face while running. “We just decided to run one day, kind of like Forrest Gump,” he explained.

“It’s nice weather, a random inspiration,” said Sember. “I was actually hot in my hoodie.”

Ann Davies, 19, a native of Wales who has lived in North Carolina for eight years, went

skiing in Ellicottville with pals. “It’s pretty hot, but it’s good weather,” she said. “The last few days the snow was kind of slushy — other than that, it was great. We had a good time.

Davies, who began skiing when she was 3, enjoyed a cheeseburger smothered with onions at Reid’s.

Samantha McElwain, 17, who works at Reid’s, said the warmer weather was a real benefit for her. “It’s better than the cold winter months. I’ve been walking to work now, about a mile. It’s nice enough out.”

Today will be partly sunny with highs ranging from around 50 near lake Ontario to the mid-50s inland. There is a chance of showers tonight with a low in the mid-40s. Showers are likely Friday, but temperatures will remain in the 50s, according to the National Weather Service forecast.
