The town’s new memorial tree program has been growing quickly.
Councilwoman Cheryl A. Antkowiak said the program is being done with Stedman’s Nursery of Newfane. Residents who wish to have a tree planted will receive an information packet from Stedman’s as well as a map of Day Road Park showing where each of the 85 trees are located. Stedman’s sells the trees along with a plaque if the resident wants one to be put up.
“Residents can dedicate a tree in Day Road Park to honor a friend or relative,” Antkowiak said.
The cost for a tree starts at $100 and could go as high as $400 depending on the type of tree. If a veteran orders the whole package, which is tree and plaque, they will get a 25 percent discount, Antkowiak said. A 50 percent down payment is required from everyone, though.
The trees will go quickly, Antkowiak said, as she has received 15 phone calls about it already. Ten trees have already been spoken for, the councilwoman said.
In other town news, the board voted to renew a sewer service contract with the City of Lockport for the Carlisle Gardens and Lincoln Village subdivisions. The price, which remains the same from the previous contract, is $596,855 a year for 2011 and 2012.
The board also approved the creation of a part time clerical position for the town court. The position would pay $10.35 an hour and will help with the increased paperwork from the rising number of caseloads, Supervisor Marc R. Smith said.
“The amount of paperwork is astronomical,” he said.
Board members also decided to amend the purchase of new recycling bins. Monday the town approved an order of 1,000 18-gallon bins for $8,845 and another order of 200 of the 32-gallon bins for $3,110.
But the move was made without including the cost of the lids that will go with the 32-gallon bins. The additional cost was $915 for the lids, which included shipping and handling. The residents’ cost for the 32-gallon bins is now $18 for each bin.
