For the first time in her collegiate sports career, Newfane native Brianna Steel has been named C-USA Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week.
Steel, 23, the daughter of Ronald and Diane Steel, is a senior at the University of Tulsa, where she majors in exercise sport science and psychology.
She recorded a school-record 5,158 points in the heptathlon at the John McDonnell Invitational. The point total won the event and ranks her 29th in the nation.
Steel placed among the top four in all six categories, winning the 800 meter run (2:16.61) and high jump (1.66m). She also finished second in the shot put (11.79m) and long jump (5.52m).
A four-year letter winner at Newfane, Steel won the state title in the pentathlon as a junior, finished second as a senior and was third as a sophomore. She also finished third in the high jump at the 2006 indoor state championships and was first in the heptathlon at the 2006 Empire State Games.
Steel also lettered in soccer with the Lady Panthers and was the senior class president.
The current holder of three Tulsa track records and a six-time letter winner there, Steel’s personal bests include 5.37m in the indoor long jump, 3,537 in the pentathlon, :26.89 in the outdoor 200m, 1.65 in the high jump and 4,690 points in the heptathlon.
Last year, Steel also excelled at track. She competed in six indoor meets, finishing ninth in the pentathlon at the C-USA Championships with 3,303 points, third in the pentathlon at the Razorback Invitational with 3,433 points and had a season-best high jump of 1.65m at the KSU All-Comers Meet.
Outdoors in 2010, she participated in six meets, placing seventh in the heptathlon with a career-best 4,690 points, won the heptathlon with 4,398 points at the Oklahoma Christian Invitational and won the 200-meter dash at the Tulsa Duels with a time of 28.36 seconds. She also set a Tulsa record in the high jump with a leap of 1.65m at the John McDonnell Invitational.
An avid mountain climber, Steel has three older sisters, Arica, Sarah and Jessica.
