LOUISVILLE —
A Lockport woman has been selected as a cheerleader for Team USA at the upcoming Worlds Competition at Walt Disney World.
Maria D’Addeo was one of just 30 girls selected from throughout the United States as a member of the 2012 Team USA All-Girls Team.
The others are Amanda Pearson, Genevieve Sell, Kelly Clifford, Nancy Miceli, Angela Stillwell, Caitlyn Hinshaw, Kirby Lynch, Courtney Byrne, Aisha Brandon, Lindsey Sitzler, Molly Harrold, Katie Loos, Kaysie Hanle, Megan Klien, Meghan Jones, Amanda Scripture, Felicia Bordonaro, Jamie Piccione, Natalie Skizas, Amy Leet, Bethany Victorino, Jacqueline Jeffries, Stephanie Bibby, Michelle Woodward, Lexie Skipper, Kelly McGrory, Madeline Jenne, Mallory Mingus, and Chelsey Kannan.
D’Addeo, a Lady Cardinals cheerleader, and her teammates, will defend the world title for the fourth straight year at the 2012 World Championships on April 26-27 in Orlando, Fla.
Tony Nash and Misty Hodges are the 2012 Team USA All-Girl Team coaches. Both have coached several National Championship teams at the collegiate level.
It wasn’t until 1923 that women were allowed to cheer for the first time, at the University of Minnesota. By the 1960s, cheerleading could be found in virtually every high school and grade school across the country, and pee wee and youth leagues had developed as well.
In 1961, Lawrence “Herkie” Herkimer, who was credited with developing the signature “Herkie” jump, the spirit stick and the pom pom — all cheerleading staples to this day, incorporated the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA).
In 1974, Jeff Web, NCA general manager, founded Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA), which taught higher level skills. The ‘80s launched many more event companies, as well as AACCA (American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Administrators), in 1987, the first association devoted to teaching safety to coaches and advisors. UCA has grown into Varsity Spirit Corp., today encompassing 17 cheerleading event, apparel and service companies.
The USA Federation for Sport Cheering is the not-for profit national governing body for sport cheering.
