Burke gets Daemon College Hall of Fame nod

AMHERST — Lockport’s Bridgette Burke was inducted into the Daemen College Athletic Hall of Fame last week at their annual awards banquet.

Burke, a 2007 Lockport High School graduate, achieved a tremendous amount of individual and team success during her four years at Daemen.

She helped lead the Wildcats to four straight seasons with 20 or more wins and to two NAIA II National Tournament appearances.

This past season, she led the Wildcats to the “Sweet 16” of the National Tournament and a 25-8 record.

Daemen was ranked 12th in the final national poll, which is the highest final ranking ever for a Daemen team.

Burke, the daughter of Patrick and Becky Burke, is routinely referred to as one of the greatest defensive players to ever put on a Wildcats uniform due to her versatility in being able to guard anyone the opposition threw at her, from point guards to centers.

She was named her team’s ‘Defensive-Player-of-the-Year’ each of the last two seasons.

Burke had some very impressive stats as she finished her career seventh all-time in scoring (1,403 points), sixth in rebounding (801), and eighth in blocked shots (84).

She is also one of Daemen’s all-time best shooters and among the school’s all-time leaders in three-pointers made (140, seventh), three-point percentage (.336, seventh), field goals made (501, ninth) and free throw percentage (.723, 10th).

This year she set a team record by hitting 46.7% from three-point range. After beginning her career with a selection to the AMC North All-Freshmen Team in 2007-08, Burke earned First Team All-AMC honors this past season and is a two-time team captain.

“Bridgette may be the most versatile player I have ever coached”, said 19-year Daemen head coach Dave Skolen.

“She could score very well both inside and out and could guard anyone on the court. She had one of the most successful careers in Daemen history and was an extreme pleasure to coach.”

Burke, 22, was one of five former Daemon greats inducted. The others are Dr. Martin J. Anisman, Marybeth Nugent, Sarah Soroka and Don Silveri.

A scholar athlete at Lockport High School, under head coach Bill Shaw, Burke was named the Niagara Frontier League’s “Player-of-the-Year” and was an All-Western New York selection, averaging 17.1 points and 9.2 rebounds per game her senior year. She was also named her senior class “Athlete-of-the-Year.”
