CAMBRIA: DWI suspect reportedly stole car from friend

CAMBRIA — A man arrested early Tuesday on charges of driving while intoxicated allegedly stole the car from a friend late Monday night, then called the man to tell him he had stolen it.

Adam R. Barry, 34, 4390 Budd Road, was charged with driving while intoxicated, first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and failure to keep right, after a 12:51 a.m. traffic stop on Lake Avenue.

A Shunpike Road man told deputies that sometime after 9:30 p.m. Monday, Barry allegedly entered his home and stole the keys to his 1998 Plymouth.

The man said he was sleeping at the time.

He told deputies Barry lives nearby and he sometimes helps Barry by driving him to AA meetings.

The man said he woke up Wednesday morning to find his car was missing.

He said he found a message on his answering machine from Barry, who allegedly said, “Hey, it’s Adam Barry. I’m the one that took your car. I’m in jail. I got all (expletive) up. I’m sorry if you want to throw the book at me.”

At the traffic stop earlier that morning, Barry allegedly told deputies he’d had “six or seven” beers before driving.

When deputies asked Barry to perform field sobriety tests, Barry allegedly said, “Why? I’m drunk.” When deputies asked him again, he allegedly said, “OK, but I’m drunk.”

He allegedly failed several field sobriety tests, using the patrol car to keep his balance several times, the report said.

He was taken into custody and registered a 0.25 percent blood alcohol content on a breath test, according to reports.

After the Shunpike Road man called deputies, Barry was additionally charged with burglary, petit larceny and unauthorized use of a vehicle.

He is being held in lieu of $1,000 bail on those charges and $750 on the DWI charge.
