A public hearing is scheduled for 4 p.m. today at Lockport Town Hall on details of the proposed Yahoo! data center in the Town of Lockport.

The well-known California Internet services company has applied for site plan approval of a 190,000-square-foot regional data center in the town's industrial park. The proposed 30-acre site is located at Junction Road and Enterprise Drive

If approved by both the town and the Yahoo! board of directors, construction could start in August. The project would be constructed in two phases, with the first phase expected to be completed in September 2010. The project would create 75 jobs, according to officials.

Scott Noteboom of Yahoo! and Orest Ciolko of Wendel Duchscherer presented the site plan to the town planning board on June 17.

Noteboom said one advantage of having the data center in Lockport would be that the climate here would ease the overheating of computer servers, thereby keeping the data center cooler and saving electricity.

"Through all of our research, we're very interested in doing the project in your area," Noteboom told the planning board.
