MAYORAL ELECTIONS: It's Kelahan in Wilson; Greenwald in Barker
The Village of Wilson turned out in unprecedented numbers on Wednesday for a mayoral election and voted in a Democrat.
Patrick Kelahan, 52, defeated incumbent mayor Thomas J. Bateman, 235-173. About half of the town’s eligible 841 voters voted. There were 19 absentee votes.
Both candidates came to the town hall at 9 p.m. to get the results.
“No matter what, the village wins. The whole village was engaged, ” said Kelahan, noting the strong interest in the village. “It’s more than four times what’s normal. Absolutely, the village has been involved. Tom has been serving the village for 11 years. A lot of folks that knew what he was doing. A lot of other folks said, ‘Let’s see if there is something new to play. Tom ran a great campaign and has been a great public servant.”
Bateman served as mayor for two terms after being a trustee for three years.
“I am disappointed,” he said. “I worked hard. The people I worked with worked hard. I thought we did a very good job. The last eight years that I’ve been mayor, we’ve accomplished quite a bit. The biggest thing we’ve accomplished is putting things together so that things work. Things run smoothly. I’m very proud of what we’ve done.”
Bateman pointed to the pier projects and the sewer treatment plant.
Kelahan, who also ran for mayor in 1989, will take office April 1 in a job that pays $6,100 annually. The Kelahans recently adopted four children, ages 5 to 12, from Colombia. They also have a 7-year-old son and 22-year-old daughter. Their son, Timothy, 18, died in an auto accident in February 2008.
